Vietnam increases tourism promotion abroad

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) will organise a programme to promote Vietnam’s tourism in China from August 18-23, an activity that has been designed in the 2017 national tourism promotion programme.

The programme will come to Xiamen city in Fujian province, Baotou city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Nanchang city in Jiangxi province, expecting to draw the participation of about 300-350 local travel companies.

China remains Vietnam’s leading tourism market. Vietnam welcomed 2.6 million Chinese holiday-makers in 2016, up 51.4 percent against the previous year. In the first seven months of this year, the number stood at 2.2 million, representing a year-on-year rise of 51 percent.

The VNAT has defined China, Laos and Cambodia, which share border lines with Vietnam, the ASEAN member countries, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, Chinese Taiwan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and several Western European nations as promising markets for Vietnam’s tourism.

Therefore, the agency is scheduled to carry out similar tourism promotion programmes in these markets in August and September 2017.

The tourism sector aims to receive 17-20 million foreign tourists and serve 82 million domestic visitors by 2020, contributing 10 percent of the country’s GDP.

Vietnam has become a major tourist destination since the 1990s, assisted by significant state and private investment, particularly in coastal regions. About 3.77 million international tourists visited Vietnam in 2009 alone.

Popular tourist destinations include the former imperial capital of Hué, the World Heritage Sites of Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Hội An and Mỹ Sơn, coastal regions such as Nha Trang, the caves of Hạlong Bay and the Marble Mountains. Numerous tourist projects are under construction, such as the Bình Dương tourist complex, which possesses the largest artificial sea in Southeast Asia.
